New Smart Traffic Lights Will Turn Green for Cyclists
A smart traffic light system that prioritises cyclists over motorists is set to be tested across the UK.
The technology will be tested in Wolverhampton, Coventry and Southampton this month, the trials were originally delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. It is expected that the technology will be tested in south London at a later date.
The aim of the smart traffic light system is to reduce road traffic accidents by using video cameras and Artificial Intelligence to turn opposing traffic signals red. This will ensure no vehicles that could be a danger to the approaching cyclist will be using the junction at the same time as the cyclist.
The cyclist will be detected approaching the junction and the lights will turn green for the cyclist by the time they reach the junction.
