Re-allocating road space for pedestrians and cyclists
New government guidance for local authorities has been released advising them on how to manage their road networks in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
The fast-tracked statutory guidance has been released following the expectation of significantly increased numbers of cyclists and pedestrians on the country’s roads.
Transport Minister Grant Shapps said: “The government … expects local authorities to make significant changes to their road layouts to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians. Such changes will help embed altered behaviours and demonstrate the positive effects of active travel.”
Some of the measures included in the guidance are: ‘pop-up’ cycle facilities such as cycle lanes, widening footways, encouraging walking and cycling to school and reducing speed limits.
There is no better time to jump on the bandwagon and replace your usual car journey by either walking or cycling!
