The UK’s First Dutch-Style Roundabout Opens
Cambridge is home to the UK’s first Dutch-style roundabout, giving pedestrians and cyclists priority over vehicles.
The roundabout opened on the 31st July 2020 and has been in operation for 2 and a half weeks at the time of writing this article.
Motorists must give way to pedestrians and cyclists at this new style of roundabout. There are zebra crossings across each of the four approaches for pedestrians to safely cross, and cyclists have an outer ring and cycle crossings across each of the four approaches to provide a full level of safety.
The geometry of the roundabout has been tightened up to encourage motorists to slow down when using the roundabout, improving safety for all pedestrians and cyclists as well as for car drivers. Given the success of this new style of safe roundabout you may well be seeing more of them in your local area over the next few years!
