Walking, cycling and mental health: understanding the benefits
Swapping to sustainable modes of transport is not only good for the environment but also good for your mental health!
Mental Health charity Mind states that over 25% of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. Companies always mention the good physical benefits of cycling or walking to work: improved weight loss, strengthened core, and improved stamina. There is often a neglect towards the benefits of mental health during exercise: reduced anxiety, increase in self-esteem and combating depression.
Researchers found that around 33% of people at risk of mental health problems including anxiety and depression could prevent their onset by doing daily exercise. GPs often prescribe physical activity for those with mild to moderate depression. It is sometimes hard to balance your stress levels at work, with challenges arising each day. Why not hop on that bike, or walk to work, to help save you the stress of rush hour traffic
Companies are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of active travel to work, and may already have schemes in place to help with the financial side of making the change already!
