World Car Free Day

Every year on the 22nd of September 2023, nations across the globe come together to celebrate World Car Free Day. This is a day dedicated to allowing people to experience streets free of motor traffic. It encourages the use of sustainable methods of transport and allows people to discover alternative methods of travel, even if just for one day.

Why not take a train, a bus, a tram, cycle or even walk to your destination. Taking public transport can be a more enjoyable experience since it gives you the freedom to do other things whilst travelling. Try catching up on emails on the bus or chatting with friends on a walk!

Whether its walking to the local shops or taking the train to work, fewer car journeys result in a happier planet and safer streets. World Car Free Day reduces the amount of air pollution, helping both the planet and ourselves to be healthier and to live longer.

By reducing the amount of motor vehicles on the road, methods of transport such as cycling and walking become much more appealable, since the streets become safer. Cycling can be daunting in some areas due to heavy traffic and chaotic roads, but with a day dedicated to being car free, more people may discover the its benefits and carry it forward into their routines outside of Car Free Day.

Every day, every person makes a difference, so get involved and switch out your car for the day! If you need some inspiration, head to Living Streets’ World Car Free Day page which provides lots of useful tips for sustainable travel.
